Almost one hundred people met yesterday in the Science, Technology and Business Park of the Universitat Jaume I installations to attend the “First medical conferences on sleep in Castellón”. This event was organised by the company Medco Health and the Spanish Sleep Association, Asenarco.

While the event was being presented, an announcement was made about the study that Medco Health has started with UJI Saludable’s collaboration. The main objective of this research work is to inform about the prevalence of sleep apnoea at the Universitat Jaume I (UJI) by making it a healthier place, detecting new cases of this disease and offering detected cases specialised attention. Nowadays, it is estimated that 10% of the population suffers sleep apnoea, approximately 4% women and 6% men.

To conduct this study, a representative sample of the UJI community was taken, which included administration staff, teaching staff, and master and PhD students, and university students over the age of 25. Medco Health will provide knowledge about diagnosing and treating this disease. UJI Saludable will provide mechanisms to reach potential patients who are willing to collaborate in the study.

This research work will also serve to diffuse sleep apnoea/hypoapnoea syndrome (SAHS) because it is underdiagnosed and society is generally not aware of it. It will also help to detect the variables that accompany this syndrome; pathological and physical factors and people’s socio-economic conditions.
