The challenge of health management after Covid-19

The current health crisis is posing an enormous challenge for society as a whole, and in particular for the health system and its professionals. Beyond the response offered to acute cases in this first wave, it is of particular concern the new reality that can happen in the short, medium and long term. Healthcare faces various scenarios for which, today, there is no adequate operating guide. Evidence is lacking, and yet we can point to some challenges that will force us to offer specific solutions.

In our country, we have the challenges of improve security protocols given the large number of healthcare workers infected by the virus. Also regain the trust of citizens, given the concern that the infection itself generates when interacting with the health system. This new situation creates a crossroads in which, on the one hand, there will be a high and sustained demand for care over time, and on the other, it will be difficult to maintain the same organization of care that was previously enjoyed.

It should be noted that it has arrived the moment to decisively implement eHealth, such as the use of telemedicine and home dispensing of medications; the use of information systems to predict, prioritize and anticipate resources; monitoring health status through smartphones or adjusting medical visits to the patient's real needs and not to a schedule predetermined in advance; the distance training of healthcare workers; and the relationships of the pharmaceutical industry with professionals.
