GEA Biotechnology, a company located in Espaitec, is developing a new protected mandarin variety called 'Mina' that is more resilient to climate change.
The technology company GEA Biotechnology has developed the mandarin variety "Mine" in collaboration with the group Ecophysiology and Biotechnology from the UJI, led by the researcher Aurelio GomezThis variety of mandarin is the first result of the Citrus Selection Platform Adapted to Demanding Agroclimatic Conditions, joint line of work aimed at the development of varieties and patterns with better performance in the face of less favorable thermal regimes, day/night contrasts, water limitation or salinity and the worsening of the quality of natural resources (soil and water).
The mandarin variety "Mine" has been presented at the Universitat Jaume I Before researchers and technicians, producers, farmers' associations and exporters, along with representatives from European supermarkets. During the exhibition, Mina stood out for being a variety with an intense orange color, balanced flavor and good shelf life, both on the tree and post-harvest.
"Mine" It has a harvest period from mid-November to mid-January, covering a key part of the season and offering consistent internal and external quality. Given the current context of rising temperatures, Mina maintains good firmness and preservation, and after adverse weather phenomena, it preserves the integrity of the skin and consistencyThis helps reduce puffiness and surface damage. These qualities position it as a sustainable and competitive alternative within the citrus growing calendar.
The new variety "Mine" It has protection in the European Union, United States y Peru, and is currently in the process of registering in Morocco, Türkiye, South Africa y Australiaconsolidating itself as a variety with great international potential.
