The aim of the day is to make visible the professionals of some of the companies that are part of the "Technological Map of the province of Castellón" (Zschimmer & Schwarz, Equip Electronics, UBE, PortCastelló, Neval and Arkadia Space), and to show the students of the Universitat Jaume I, their daily activity and responsibilities.
This Tuesday the second edition of the event was held in Espaitec «FemSTEM: Women in Technology», a meeting that has highlighted the role of educated women STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) who work in technology companies, and are part of the «Technological Map of the province of Castellón», an initiative supported by the Ministry of Innovation, Industry, Tourism and Trade.
The regional secretary for Innovation, Jerome Mora, and the Vice-Rector for Innovation, Transfer and Scientific Dissemination, david cabedo, opened the session. Mora highlighted "the support of the Generalitat Valenciana and the Ministry of Innovation, Industry, Trade and Tourism to the FemSTEM event, within the framework of the agreement with the Universitat Jaume I, since the role of STEM women, their capacity for leadership and transforming innovation through creativity, and promoting competitiveness in the province of Castellón should be celebrated."
Cabedo said that "the conferences help to make visible the fundamental role of women working in the technological areas of companies, and that they can be role models for younger generations when it comes to approaching their professional careers, thus contributing to closing the gap between women and men in this type of profession."
The event began with the intervention of Carmina Alfonso, Director of Global Corporate Development at Zschimmer & Schwarz, who explained to the students what it means to lead the areas of marketing, market intelligence, business development, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), along with project management for the nine international divisions of the business group. Next, Lucia Solsona, Hardware Design Engineer at Equip Electronics, has explained his work in the development of R&D projects in control and power electronics, PCB design and verification of electronic boards using advanced instrumentation.
Then Eva Sanchez-Barcaiztegui, Head of Railway Operations Division at PortCastello, has detailed its experience in project management and intermodal transport, such as the Study of the Implementation of the Standard Gauge in the Mediterranean Corridor. It is worth highlighting the special intervention of Büsra Kahraman, a propulsion engineer at Arkadia Space, who has shared with the students of the Universitat Jaume I the basis of her work in the field of rocket propulsion and aerospace technologies.
The day has progressed with the participation of Barbara Franch, Head of the Polymers R&D Group at UBE Corporation Europe, who has explained what it means to supervise innovative projects and develop advanced solutions for the industry in a laboratory. Next, Kristrell Santander, CEO at Naval, explained how she combines her role as general director with her agricultural research tasks, especially in the field of sports turf and plant health.
Once the interventions were over, the space was given to questions for the attendees, mainly students from the Higher School of Technology and Experimental Sciences (ESTCE), who raised their doubts and concerns with the technologists invited to the event.
The day has been closed by Juan Antonio Bertolin, director of Espaitec and manager of the Fundació General de la Universitat Jaume I, who stressed that "it is important to highlight that the presence and leadership of women in the technological field is not only a question of equity, but also a strategy for economic development. Numerous studies indicate that regions that promote equal opportunities in key sectors such as STEM achieve greater competitiveness and sustained economic growth."
Speed Dating: Technologists and Students
By pre-registering, students have had the opportunity to meet privately with professionals working at Zschimmer & Schwarz, Equip Electronics, UBE, PortCastelló, Neval and Arkadia Space, who have answered questions raised by students about the tasks performed by female technologists in the province of Castellón.
The purpose of Speed Dating, is to give added value to the students, since in addition to promoting, making visible and consolidating their option of STEM studies, it is achieved through a private meeting with the technologists, that each student receives professional and personalized guidance.
