The General Foundation of the Universitat Jaume I, the managing entity of Espaitec, and the Institute of Advanced Materials of the UJI, with the support of the company Abervian, are implementing technologies for the intelligent management of the green hydrogen demonstrator for its production and storage, thanks to the financial support of the Ministry of Industry, Tourism, Innovation and Trade
podcast, Institute of Advanced Materials (INAM-UJI), in collaboration with the company AbervianThey have developed technologies focused on the intelligent management of the hydrogen production and storage demonstrator, powered by photovoltaic solar energy. This development is based on the design of a Energy Management System (EMS) capable of monitoring and controlling a hybrid installation in which the energy generated by a photovoltaic plant can be used for different purposes: direct electricity consumption, battery storage or green hydrogen production by electrolysis.
The system coordinates Two complementary energy vectors (battery and hydrogen) to optimize the management of renewable energy generated by the solar installation, allowing dynamic management of the energy flow from the photovoltaic installation, deciding at each moment whether this energy is used to power the process, charge the battery or produce hydrogen through electrolysis.
Once the process is finished, That hydrogen can be converted back into electricity using a fuel cellThis architecture utilizes stored renewable energy when solar production is unavailable. It enables the optimization of long-duration energy storage strategies based on green hydrogen, combined with electrochemical battery storage.
The technology developed facilitates the Research into new energy management strategies in hybrid renewable systemsin which solar energy can be transformed into hydrogen for storage and later reuse. These types of configurations will be key in future decarbonized energy systems, where the Green hydrogen will allow the storage of large amounts of renewable energy for long periods., complementing the role of batteries in energy management.
Green Hydrogen Demonstrator
The demonstrator consists of a Innovative energy storage system that integrates solar energy and green hydrogenA 5 kW photovoltaic installation supplies renewable electricity to a 1,5 kW electrolyzer, which produces hydrogen from water. The hydrogen generated It is stored in an 800-liter tank at a pressure of 6 bar.allowing the conservation of solar energy produced during periods of surplus. Subsequently, This hydrogen can be used in a 1 kW fuel cell to generate electricity when photovoltaic production is insufficient or unavailable. In this way, the system not only generates renewable energy, but also allows for its storage and on-demand use, improving the management and utilization of solar energy. Through this demonstrator, The business sector will be able to benefit from clean energy, improving industrial processes and facilitating the transition towards decarbonization., while creating synergies to promote university-business knowledge transfer.
It is worth noting that the implementation of this demonstrator has been made possible thanks to the collaboration agreement between the General Foundation of the Jaume I University, managing entity of podcast, and the Valencian Agency for Innovation (AVI) in 2023, and subsequent agreements in later years with the Ministry of Industry, Tourism, Innovation and Trade.
