podcast will continue to promote projects such as Kimibox at the UJI.>LAB, LivingLab of Espaitec, with the support of the Pediatric Oncology Unit of the General University Hospital of Castelló, through the cooperation agreement with the Valencian generalitat, through the Department of Universal Health and Public Health. The Kimibox initiative is based on the fopening of boxes to house medication for use in chemotherapy processes, decorated with different elements, in a process of co-creation between the students of the degree in Engineering in Industrial Design and Product Development at the UJI and a team of professionals from the HGUC Pediatric Oncology Unit.
The project Kimibox It was started by the need give encouragement and strength to children and adolescents throughout the cancer treatment process, along with family members and the closest environment, during the disease process, providing them with extra help and motivation from an emotional perspective. In circumstances like these, not only is medical-health care sufficient, from the point of view of oncological treatment, but they are necessary psychological and social support actions for patients and families with the purpose of offering them strength, support and help during the course of the illness.
The UJI.>LAB Challenge Kimibox
The main objective of the project Kimibox was design and print in 3D, with the help of Espaitec's rapid prototyping laboratory, FabLab, a set of boxes that will house chemotherapy doses, so that the treatment bags will be hidden behind them and, through their designs, humanize the medication process. The chemotherapy boxes were decorated with different elements such as stickers, blackboards and cartoon figures.
The initiative Kimibox was developed within the initiative UJI.>LAB Challenge, focused on the resolution of society's challenges by the university community, with the participation of undergraduate students in Industrial Design Engineering and Product Development of the Universitat Jaume I, who, in a co-creative process together with health professionals from the Pediatric Oncology Unit of the General University Hospital of Castelló, proposed possible solutions and designs to the challenge of humanizing pediatric oncological treatment. The session was carried out using the methodology Innovation Camp, based on an adapted hybridization of various known methodologies that promote the development of open, collaborative and multidisciplinary innovation processes in which they explore, experiment, prototype, validate with real users, discover and, above all, learn. That is, a LivingLab in its pure essence. The students worked in several groups and using graphic support to define the problem and propose the best solution.
Validation of UJI designs.>LAB Challenge Kimibox
The students of the degree in Engineering in Industrial Design and Product Development of the Universitat Jaume I delivered the designed prototypes to the HGUC Pediatric Oncology Unit for validation. The manufacturing of the Kimibox boxes was carried out in Espaitec's prototyping laboratory, FabLab, which was available to the participating students during the manufacturing period. Specifically, The manufacturing of the Kimibox boxes was carried out using 3D printers and computers with the Cura software installed.
The main objective was validate functionality in a real healthcare environment. To do this, they evaluated aspects, such as, for example, the emotional impact of Kimibox designs in children or adolescents during treatment; he mounting and assembly system; the storage system; The suitability of Kimibox in the cleaning and/or sterilization process; The durability next to adaptation to the healthcare environment (corners, sharp areas, etc.) that can compromise the treatment administration bag.
UJI.>LAB, Espaitec's LivingLab
El UJI.>LAB has as purpose facilitate and implement co-creative projects, that is, projects in which the end user is incorporated into their design, either through Final Degree Projects (TFGs) o Master's Final Projects (TFMs) or projects of another nature, incorporating the most innovative methodologies driven by European Network of LivingLabs (ENOLL), of which Espaitec has been a part since 2011. To this end, Espaitec makes available to the university community the FabLab, the prototyping laboratory that allows us to obtain a tangible product as a result. The FabLab has the most advanced technology in I3D printers, Resin Printers, Laser Cutters, Cutting Plotters, Precision CNC, CNC for large formats y 3D scanners.
The launch of the initiative UJI.>LAB has been possible thanks to the financing of the Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness (IVACE), in its first phase during 2019, and the Valencian Innovation Agency (AVI), in subsequent phases from 2020 to the present.
