The conference "Batteries, a challenge to solve in the decarbonization process" is an open innovation initiative, coordinated by Espaitec within the multi-sector program Innotransfer, promoted by the Network of Valencian Science Parks (REPCV), with the support of the Agència Valenciana of Innovation (AVI)
This morning the conference "Innotransfer: Batteries, a challenge to be solved in the decarbonization process" was held, where companies, technological institutes and universities have reflected on energy storage as a key factor in industrial decarbonization, specifically on the possibilities of batteries to facilitate the reduction, elimination and neutralization of CO2 emissions. Business challenges that are identified by the Specialized Strategic Innovation Committees (CEIE) of the Valencian Innovation Agency (AVI), supported by the European Climate Law, and the Law of Climate Change and Ecological Transition of the Generalitat Valenciana, highlighting the importance of university-business knowledge transfer to continue improving production processes and increasing energy efficiency.
The vice-rector for Innovation, Transfer and Scientific Dissemination of the Jaume I University, David Cabedo, together with the president of the Valencian Science Parks Network and director of Espaitec, Juan Antonio Bertolín, inaugurated the day. Cabedo thanked the different speakers for their participation in the conference and the financial support of the Valencian Innovation Agency (AVI) to develop the Innotransfer program. He also added that "the new energy model, towards which we are moving, requires a significant boost in innovations for energy storage, one of the main challenges being to be able to develop innovations without a negative impact, both on the carbon footprint and in the exploitation of natural resources.
For his part, Bertolín highlighted that the objective of the conference is to once again address the challenge of decarbonization, specifically how electrical energy will be managed from renewables and its storage. "It is essential to identify the challenges that batteries present, since currently the growth is exponential with the production of electric vehicles."
The day began with a presentation on the technological evolution of batteries, their challenges and future trends, given by the battery researcher at the Energy Technology Institute (ITE), Leire Zubizarreta. «Some technological challenges for batteries today are to improve energy density, obtain lower cost, greater safety and faster charging. However, there are also environmental, economic and social challenges.
Next, the researcher and professor at the Jaume I University, Héctor Beltrán, spoke. "One of the main challenges of the sector is the standardization of batteries, and work is currently being done to standardize the format so that they can be reused and have a second life."
Next, the director of Neptury Technologies, Enrique Navarro, stated that his company has designed the most demanding battery system that exists to cool a battery.
The event has advanced with the presentation of the CEO of Abervian and president of the Valencian Association of Electric Vehicles (AVVE), Javier Barahona, who has pointed out that "we currently know the technology, but there are many lines of development research to make the model technological and economic is more profitable and more in line with the needs of users. "At Abervian we are working on the Cloud BMS, Advanced Sensors and Digitalization to design the batteries of the future."
The presentation space ended with the CEO of Cover Solar, Luis Navarro, presenting various success stories in energy storage, such as the installation of the largest industrial megabattery for self-consumption in Europe in the textile company TexAthenea, a system that allows store two megawatts per hour. At the end of the exhibition, a debate was opened between the speakers, the audience in the room and the participants online.
To close the day, the president of the Valencian Science Parks Network and director of Espaitec, Juan Antonio Bertolín, presented the challenge platform of the Innotransfer program and thanked the participants, in person and online, for their interest in the day, encouraging them to follow the evolution of the initiative.
