The humanization of healthcare under debate at the colloquium “La Clau… de la Innovació” organized by Espaitec at the La Plana hospital in Vila-real
Espaitec has organized with the collaboration of the Globalis Foundation and the La Plana University Hospital of Vila-real, a colloquium talk in which humanization in dealing with patients has been debated from all perspectives. A meeting point where health professionals of diverse profiles and patients have treated different points of view with the utmost respect, addressing a problem that is becoming a priority for the health sector.
Moderated by the Manager of the General Foundation of the Universitat Jaume I and Director of Management of Espaitec, Juan Antonio Bertolín, the session included the participation of a panel of experts formed by Ignasi Barrachina, project coordinator of the Human Foundation; Rosa María Salazar de la Guerra, managing director of the Guadarrama Hospital; Pilar Molés Julio, professor of the nursing department and coordinator of clinical practices at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the UJI; Pascual Benet, psychologist and ICF coach, professor at the Valencian Institute of Public Security and Emergencies (IVASPE); Manuel Pons Claramonte, SAMU Valencia and HEMS 112 Aragón Doctor; Soledad Carreguí Vilar, supervising midwife of the Delivery Room of the University Hospital of La Plana; Santiago Gras Balaguer, doctor specializing in Family and Community Medicine at the Carinyena health center in Vila-real, and Sixto Barbera, vice president of the ASpanish Association Against Cancer.
Some of the most important speeches during the colloquium have been that the relationship of patients is not only with health workers, it is also with the system and organizations. It has also been highlighted that individual initiatives have to be the beginning of humanization, but organizations have to take part in that humanization for it to be effective. From family medicine they have highlighted that humanization is constant because there is continuous monitoring and from psychology, the importance of ensuring that the patient is in the appropriate emotion in their dealings with the healthcare provider.
Among the final conclusions, it is worth highlighting that the health system requires reflection to facilitate rapprochement and empathy between doctor and patient in order to consider the latter more as a person than as an object. Here new technologies and training are essential. Technologies, defined by experts as transformative tools for the health system, can support the evolution towards a humanization that is not always simple, especially in environments such as emergencies. Training in patient treatment from a more psychological than technical point of view is essential for health professionals.
"“La Clau… de la Innovació” is a project to disseminate science, technology and innovation carried out by Espaitec and financed by Department of Education, Research, Culture and Sports of the Generalitat Valenciana, which aims to generate meeting points in different municipalities in the province of Castellón to promote open debates between experts and citizens on current issues. The next session is scheduled for September, where the topic of urban planning and sustainability will be discussed.
