Cuida't Espaitec shows what food labels hide

May 26th 2021

The cycle Cuida't Espaitec, a set of training and dissemination actions focused on health and well-being, held the last online session dedicated to healthy nutrition in the work environment on May 25. The session was taught by Lina Granell, graduated in Pharmacy and graduated in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Valencia, titled "What do food labels hide?".

In the online workshop it was presented the keys to learning to interpret the labeling of food products, from knowing the nutritional information based on the serving size to knowing which allergens should be indicated on the packaging. They stood out the most camouflaged ingredients on labels, such as sugar, which can appear hidden under other names such as "syrups", "concentrates", and in words ending in "-ose" (sucrose or fructose), "-ine" (maltodexterin) or "-ol" (sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, etc.). The high intake of added sugars that we usually introduce into our body through quick and common options such as simple cookies, cereals or industrial juices was also highlighted.

Granell shared with the participants alternatives for sweet lovers to sweeten a dish, such as using fresh or dehydrated fruit, grated coconut, cinnamon, vanilla or vegetable and dairy derivatives. Another of the points that were discussed were the latest advances in making it easier for consumers to read the label correctly, initiatives such as Nutriscore, a European traffic light table that is beginning to be launched, or mobile applications such as Yuka o MyRealFood that allow you to quickly read the qualities of a product by scanning it through mobile devices.

podcast strengthens its commitment to strengthening the well-being and health of its companies' workforce, promoting a positive and productive work environment by carrying out Cuida't Espaitec, a series of conferences and workshops aimed at people who are part of the innovative and technological ecosystem of the UJI and the business community of Castellón, which has the support of the Department of Innovation, Universities, Science and Digital Society of the Generalitat Valenciana.
