Four research groups from the Universitat Jaume I have participated in the Demo Day of the program UJISpinoff, where they presented their projects to a team of investors. The meeting, organized by Espaitec, brought together researchers and stakeholders from the investment ecosystem with the aim of promoting the creation of Knowledge-Based Companies (KBCs) based on research results.
Demo Day began with a round table discussion in which participants participated. Josep Biosca, SHIP2B Foundation, Cristina de Ochoa, Grow Venture Partners, and Nuria Fernandez, UN-EMDuring the panel discussion, the main challenges facing university spin-offs were discussed, such as legal barriers, intellectual property management, and defining the shareholder agreement. Key criteria valued by investors in this type of project were also detailed, and practical recommendations were offered to help scientific teams increase their chances of business success.
Participating projects
The session continued with the presentation of the projects by the participating research groups. Applied Biomedicine Research Group (Biotransfer) has presented aRukon, a health ICT platform focused on the exchange of animal testing samples. For its part, the group GROC has unveiled its project NanoGroc, a proposal based on the synthesis of high-purity nanoparticles to design nanofluids. The group then GRAPE has shown GRAPE-MARS, a research software focused on multimodal discourse analysis using video annotations. Finally, the group ENCOM has exposed La Cierva, a scientific communication initiative with a professional and academic focus.
The day concluded with an informal networking space to foster connections between research staff and investors from entities such as Banco Santander Startups, BStartup Banco Sabadell, BeAble Capital, Bullnet Capital, Successful Fund y DRY.
UJISpinoff
The purpose of UJISpinoff, promoted by Espaitec in collaboration with the Knowledge Transfer Office (OTC), is to support UJI researchers seeking to translate their research results to the market. The program offers support from the initial ideation phases to the validation of their business model and preparation for the business launch. This initiative is supported by the Ministry of Innovation, Industry, Commerce and Tourism and Department of Education, Culture, Universities and Employment of the Generalitat Valenciana.
