The councilor for sustainability, Sara Usó, participates in the development session of the two winning ideas of the challenges proposed by the Castellón City Council
The Councilor for Environmental Sustainability, Sara Usó, has participated in the Climathon 2016, the largest event on climate change that has been held in several cities around the world simultaneously. During the day, the participants presented their ideas for the two challenges of the Castellón City Council. Usó thanked “the high number of ideas” that the attendees have presented and highlighted that “citizen participation is the basis for improving the city.”
On the one hand, the first challenge has focused on the concept of “renaturalizing the city” and the participants have contributed their innovative ideas to try to combat the heat island effect. The winning idea was that of Ángel Gallardo, who presented a project based on “photosynthetic cities”. Gallardo has presented the idea of a paint that could be used on facades, roofs or urban furniture and with contact with light this paint would eliminate greenhouse gases, except CO2. On the other hand, the idea selected for the “Smart Green Cities” challenge was that of Diego López. His initiative consists of creating a sustainable vehicle that would be between a car and a bike. It would be a covered bicycle that would work using a battery that would be recharged through a solar panel installed on the roof.
The event had around twenty participants who in total presented seven solutions to the challenges proposed by the City Council. After a selection of ideas, one for each challenge posed, the attendees have been divided into work groups to implement improvements in the selected ideas collaboratively. The promoters of the two selected ideas, Ángel Gallardo and Diego López, have received as a prize a virtual connection to espaitec for six months free of charge. This connection, in addition to allowing the use of the Park's facilities, means receiving free advice for the definition of the idea and the analysis of its possible implementation.
Climathon Castellón was held throughout the morning of Friday, October 28, being part of the macro event Enrédate Castellón 2016, with the collaboration of Climate Kic Spain, Foundation for Energy Efficiency, espaitec, CEEI Castellón, Universitat Jaume I and Generalitat Valenciana .
