The company, linked to Espaitec, participates as a technological subcontractor to develop control systems applied to supercapacitors, flywheels and superconducting magnets.

Abervian, a company linked to Espaitec, has been selected as a technological subcontractor in the European project POSEIDON, which aims to reduce emissions from shipping through the use of advanced energy storage technology. This initiative is funded by the Horizon Europe and coordinated by the Naval and Sea Technology Center (CTN).

POSEIDON It has a budget of nearly €5 million and brings together 12 entities from five European countries. The project seeks to demonstrate the feasibility of integrating rapid-response storage systems—such as supercapacitors, flywheels, and superconducting magnets—into commercial vessels, with the goal of reducing shipping emissions by up to 90%.

The POSEIDON project, launched in 2023, is aligned with the European Green Deal strategy to achieve emission-free maritime mobility. In addition to testing prototypes of these technologies in relevant environments, the consortium will generate evaluation tools and roadmaps to enable their future implementation in various maritime transport segments.

Among the entities participating in the project are the CTN, CIEMAT, CERN, Balearia, Women, Cyclomed, FATHER, ANTECSA, ANTEC, TPH, UPM and EFESTO.

Abervian Participation

Abervian will contribute to the development and programming of the high-level control (HLC) system responsible for managing the onboard power converters. Its responsibilities include developing the LabVIEW control code for the dynamic management of the storage systems, designing an HMI interface to facilitate the management and monitoring of the hybrid systems, and supporting their functional integration under real-world naval operating conditions.
