The project has been recognized with the 2025 Highest Impact Collaborative Project Award from the Light Mobility Cluster
Businesses Abervian y NEXT Electric Motors They are developing the project REBORN (Recharging and Energy Based on Resource Optimization and Second Life Batteries), a collaborative R&D initiative that aims to create a hybrid energy storage and recharging system based on the reuse of batteries from electric vehicles.
The project has recently been recognized with the Award for the Collaborative Project with the Greatest Impact 2025 awarded by the Light Mobility Cluster, an award that highlights its contribution to technological innovation, sustainability and the circular economy within the electric mobility sector.
An energy storage system based on second-life batteries
REBORN addresses one of the main challenges of the energy transition: safely and efficiently integrating second-life batteries into energy storage and recharging systems.
Currently, battery reuse presents several technical challenges stemming from the heterogeneous degradation of their cells and the variability in their electrical behavior. To address these limitations, the project includes the development of advanced methodologies for characterizing and analyzing reused batteries, as well as predictive models to estimate their lifespan and degradation progression.
The system also incorporates dynamic charging and unloading control strategies, integration with energy conversion systems and renewable energy sources, and the development of a technology demonstrator that will allow the solution to be validated in a real-world environment.
The goal is to maximize the residual value of batteries from electric mobility, extend their useful life beyond their use in automotive applications, and reduce the environmental impact associated with their management.
A project developed in cooperation
The project is being developed in cooperation between Abervian and NEXT Electric Motors within the program PIDCOP-CV 2025Abervian is leading the development of the storage and charging system architecture, the design of the dynamic control system, and its integration with renewable energy conversion systems. The company contributes its expertise in the development of batteries and battery management systems (BMS), AC and DC charging infrastructure, battery swapping systems, and smart energy management solutions.
NEXT Electric Motors is contributing its expertise in electric vehicle batteries and their lifecycle performance. The company is leading the advanced characterization of reused batteries and the validation of the developed system. The project also benefits from the technological collaboration of the ITENE center, which is assisting with characterization and supporting the development of the prototype.
Towards a replicable energy storage model
Beyond the development of a technology demonstrator, REBORN proposes a replicable and scalable energy storage model that can be applied in different environments, from urban charging infrastructures to energy storage systems for industrial applications.
The project also includes integration with energy self-consumption models and smart grids, as well as the development of digital energy management and monitoring platforms.
This approach creates new opportunities for battery manufacturers, charging operators, waste managers, and energy companies interested in integrating sustainable solutions based on battery reuse.
Contribution to the circular economy
REBORN aligns with the objectives of the European Green Deal and the Smart Specialisation Strategy of the Valencian Community (S3 CV), contributing to reducing technological waste and associated emissions, optimizing energy resources and promoting digitalisation in energy management.
The project also strengthens Abervian and NEXT Electric Motors' position in the field of electric mobility and energy storage, driving new opportunities for technological development and industrial collaboration.
