The social and technological entrepreneurship program promoted by the vice-rectors for Research and Transfer and for Students and Social Commitment of the Universitat Jaume I A new edition starts. A total of 23 ideas promoted by the university community have been presented this afternoon at Espaitec to be the protagonists of a training and mentoring program that will help them transform into entrepreneurial projects with social, technological and/or environmental impact.
UJI Empren OnSocial It is organized jointly by the INCREA Chair of Innovation, Creativity and Learning and the Scientific and Technological Park of the Universitat Jaume I (Espaitec) in collaboration with the association SECOT Castellón (Spanish Seniors for Technical Cooperation). An initiative that in its third edition is consolidated as a reference program to undertake at the UJI. A total of 49 people from the university community have registered on the program's web platform to present ideas, both in the form of new challenges and solutions to the challenges already presented. Of these, 23 ideas have been selected to participate in the program, in the training and mentoring sessions that will take place from November 2019 to July 2020.
Regarding the profile of the participating entrepreneurs, undergraduate and master's students are the most interested in the program, representing 57% of the total selected projects, followed by the group of SAUJI Alumni with 26%. It is worth highlighting the increase in initiatives promoted by research personnel (PDI) and service personnel (PAS), being 13% and 4% of the total respectively.. Among the selected ideas that aspire to be entrepreneurial projects after passing through the program, special mention is made of solutions for depopulation, sustainable mobility, accessible travel, greater visibility for women in sports or aid to small businesses compared to large stores.
The presentation event was chaired by Jesús Lancis, Vice-Rector for Research and Transfer, and Inmaculada Rodríguez, Vice-Rector for Students and Social Commitment, both accompanied by Daniel Escrig, SECOT representative in the program.
Other projects to promote entrepreneurship at the Universitat Jaume I
During the event, two were presented European Erasmus+ projects which aim to promote entrepreneurship at the Universitat Jaume I. CRE8® Europe, where Cátedra Increa participates, has as its main objective to contribute to the development of transversal skills of university students such as creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship.
To develop these skills, different workshops will be held at the participating universities. During these workshops, companies will pose real challenges and students, in different multidisciplinary and international groups, will work together to solve them. This project is led by the Karlstad University of Sweden and, in addition to the UJI, the Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu in Romania and the Inland University of Norway also participate.
The project Mentech, where Espaitec participates, tries to design new methodologies for effective mentoring among young technological entrepreneurs and intends to carry out an analysis of more than 200 initiatives from various countries in the European Union. In addition, it will try to develop a common methodology that will help mentors from different countries to use best practices and proofs of concept to help entrepreneurs.
In addition to the UJI Science and Technology Park, other European parks participate in the project, such as Technoscope Mersin TeknoPark in Turkey, Tartu Science Park in Estonia, Madam Science Park in Portugal, ISTEC in Belgium or Science and Technology Park of Crete.
Evolution of the program in data
In the three calls held so far, 119 members of the university community have registered on the program platform to present ideas, both in the form of new challenges and solutions to the challenges already presented.
Taking the two completed editions as a reference, 32 ideas have become entrepreneurial initiatives after the project matured in the training phases of the program. Of these, 10 have become finalists and 2 have become companies, each receiving a €10.000 subsidy to launch their business project.
The companies created have been: Foodration4all, which aims to improve the current system of food donation and social integration of disadvantaged people, and GreenFlight, a start-up that uses unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to preserve forests. In the month of November, the winning projects of the second edition of the program will be announced, giving rise to the creation of two new entrepreneurial companies of a social nature.
